ISU School of Nursing and Career Center receive $300,000 gift from Union Health
Indiana State University has received a $300,000 gift from Union Health to fund a Nursing Student Success Center to support ISU students while creating a larger pipeline of nursing employees for Union Health.
In recognition of the gift, ISU’s Board of Trustees on Friday approved the naming of the Union Health Nursing Skills Lab in the College of Health and Human Services.
“We are grateful for our long partnership with Union Health and this generous gift to Indiana State University’s School of Nursing,” ISU President Dr. Deborah J. Curtis said. “Training high-quality nurses is one of the ways ISU serves the local community and the state, and this gift will help us accomplish this important goal.”
Dr. Caroline Mallory, Dean of the College of Health and Human Services, noted that ISU’s relationship with Union Health goes back to 1950 when the university affiliated with the Union Hospital School of Nursing to offer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
“Since that time, our partnership has evolved and strengthened to support nursing education and to develop a highly qualified nursing workforce for the Wabash Valley,” Mallory said. “I am grateful for this amazing gift from Union Health in recognition of the need to keep innovating to support the next generation of professional nurses. My thanks in particular to Mr. Steve Holman, CEO, and Ms. Rhonda Smith, CNO, for their support and vision for 21st-century nursing education.”
Union Health is an integrated health system made up of Union Hospital, Union Medical Group, and Union Hospital Clinton.
“We are excited to support the nursing program at Indiana State University, through a collaborative partnership fund, that will enrich the lives of young nurses in our community and allow future employment opportunities at Union Health,” said Rhonda Smith, Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at Union Health.
Within the Nursing Student Success Center, the gift will be used to fund professional support staff and peer tutors for nursing and pre-nursing students.
“The School of Nursing values the long-standing relationship we enjoy with Union Hospital and are delighted to expand our partnership to include additional support to our students,” said Dr. Jill Moore, Executive Director of the ISU School of Nursing. “Indiana State University nursing students will greatly benefit from Union Hospital’s generous gift, allowing more students to achieve their goal of becoming a nurse.”
Professional nursing has been part of ISU since the university partnered with Terre Haute hospitals in 195O. The Nursing program has earned a reputation for graduating highly qualified nurses who serve communities in Indiana, the United States and around the globe. The School of Nursing offers fully accredited undergraduate and graduate programs.
