Sycamore alum Jarrod Watkins signed by Arizona Diamondbacks

Indiana State alum Jarrod Watkins is now with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization as the MLB team signed him from the Lake Erie Crushers earlier this week.

Watkins had played 13 games for the Crushers in the 2022 season hitting .340 with two home runs and seven RBI. He becomes the second former Sycamore to sign with the Diamondbacks in recent months joining Roby Enriquez who signed with Arizona back in December. Enriquez was recently promoted and is now with the Diamondbacks' Double-A Amarillo Sod Poodles.

Watkins played three seasons in the Frontier League with Southern Illinois and Lake Erie prior to signing with the Diamondbacks.

The Washington, Ill. native transferred to Indiana State prior to the 2018 season and immediately made an impact in the ISU lineup earning MVC All-Defensive team honors at second base, while starting all 55 games. He finished second on the team with a .305 batting average and added 12 doubles and two triples in the lineup. Watkins was one of the toughest players to strike out in the NCAA in his first season and added a 22-game on-base streak and 14-game hitting streak to open his Sycamore career.

The 2019 season saw him continue to pace the Sycamores as he was a key part of the squad that won the MVC Tournament Championship. He was a First Team All-Conference and All-Tournament selection for the team after a season that featured a team-best .306 batting average while starting all 61 games. He added a team-high 13 doubles and two home runs, while adding 33 RBI on the year.

Prior to his time at Indiana State, Watkins played at both Central Michigan University and Wabash Valley College.
