Sycamores welcome Ball State and SIU for Senior Day meet
Indiana State Swimming and Diving is back in the pool this weekend as the Sycamores celebrate Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at the Vigo County Aquatic Center. ISU will host Ball State and Southern Illinois in a tri-meet starting at 1 p.m.
The Sycamores will recognize 2022-23 seniors Carmen Alard Vegas, Carmina Armstrong, Molly Fogarty, Marni Gray, Tori Johns, Marissa Kozel, Kaimi Matsumoto, Sarah Moreau, Colleen O'Connor, Andrea Putrimas, Rachel Sanqunetti, and Rhiannon Wozny in Indiana State's final home meet of the year. The Senior Day presentation will take place prior to the start of the meet.
"We're looking forward to honoring our seniors on Saturday," ISU head coach Josh Christensen said. "This is a large class that has had a huge impact on this program and will be leaving a tremendous legacy."
The Sycamores are in their first action of the 2023 calendar year after a strong start to the fall season. Indiana State picked up wins over UIC, Northern Iowa, and Illinois State at the Valley Showcase in October to highlight the fall. ISU closed out the 2022 calendar year with a dominant showing in Jacksonville, Fla. as the Sycamores closed out their training week with a 206-56 win at North Florida.
ISU will look to ride the momentum from the fall as they take on both Ball State and SIU for the first time this season.
"SIU and Ball State are both very talented, well-coached teams," Christensen said. "They will provide us really strong competition, as we use these last few meets to prepare for the MVC Championships next month."
The Sycamores enter the weekend's meet sitting second overall in the Missouri Valley's dual meet rankings. ISU sits with an average of 709.60 points over the 2022 season trailing just Missouri State (725.35), while leading SIU (706.25).
ISU's depth continues to be a major factor in the Sycamores season with multiple athletes possessing the ability to score in several events this season. The Sycamores continue to boast athletes that sit in the top-three in multiple event rankings including Andrea Putrimas (200 & 500 Free), Esther Rydbeck Norden (1500 Free), Madie Rutan (100 & 200 Back), Marni Gray (50 & 100 Fly), Katie Dougherty (200 Fly), Kaimi Matsumoto (100 IM), Zoe Smith (1M Dive) and all five relay events.
In their latest competition, the Sycamores depth was fully showcased as ISU took 13 of the 14 event wins in the win at North Florida. Overall, nine different ISU athletes recorded victories in the win over the Ospreys as the Sycamores wrapped up their trip down to Florida.
