Pomeroys suffer sixth consecutive loss

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods men's basketball suffered a sixth straight loss Thursday, this one coming to a 17-5 Point Park squad that improved to 8-3 in the River States Conference. The Pioneers led by as many as 31 and picked up an 85-62 victory.

The Pomeroys put together several highlight reel plays early in the first half with a solid start.

Elkin Ramirez, who led SMWC with 13 points, hit his first two shots for a 5-0 SMWC lead. Keith Germain had a pair of dunks as SMWC stayed within 16-13 at the 9:40 mark.

A 15-foot jumper from Davin Miller pulled SMWC within 18-15 and Germain converted in the lane to make it 22-17.

But Point Park went on a 15-4 run over the next four minutes as Jo Valrie scored for a 37-22 lead with 2:36 before the half. Valrie, the No. 2 scorer in the RSC at 19 points-per-game, had 19 of his game-high 25 in the first half. The Pioneers went into the break with a 43-24 lead.

Ramirez and J.J. Evans had eight points apiece in the second half for SMWC.

The Pomeroys remained winless at home and will go for their first home victory Saturday against Carlow (1-21, 0-11 RSC).
