ISU team places second in college insurance competition
The Indiana State University team placed second in Selective Insurance's 2023 College Competition, an annual program for aspiring insurance professionals.
Seniors Bryce McLeish, Gabe Youngblood, Kyle Koch, along with Julia Sonntag, a junior, and Jillian Turner, a sophomore, operated a simulated insurance agency and competed against teams from universities nationwide during the month-long challenge.
The students were mentored by two ISU insurance and risk management program alumni from Gibson in Indianapolis: Brittany Graman, Learning and Development Specialist and Jak Kramer, Commercial Risk Advisor.
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte won first place and the Illinois State University team came in third place.
"Selective's College Competition provides students with enriching, hands-on experience that gives real-world insight into a potential insurance career," said Robert Redden, Vice President, Distribution Strategy and Insurance Learning Services, Selective. "Each team proved they understand the complexities of running a profitable insurance agency, making thoughtful business decisions, and managing financial solvency with help from Selective-appointed insurance agency mentors. These students are the next generation of bright insurance industry leaders."
Selective gives a monetary donation to the top three team's chapters of Gamma Iota Sigma, an international, professional organization that promotes, encourages, and sustains student interest in insurance, risk management, and actuarial science professions.
"The Selective College Competition is a highlight each February and the students were thrilled to have the opportunity to compete again this year," said Rebecca Wray, Director, Gongaware Center and Networks Financial Institute and Advisor for the Alpha Epsilon Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma. "We appreciate Selective's continued support of developing the next generation of insurance industry leaders and plan to utilize the donation to Gamma Iota Sigma to participate in the upcoming Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America, Inc. Legislative Conference being held in Washington, D.C. in April."
