SMWC softball sweeps IUPUC

The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods softball team improved to 10-6 with a doubleheader sweep of Indiana University Purdue University Columbus on Saturday at the SMWC Softball Field.

Summer Rocha tossed a seven-inning shutout as the Pomeroys rolled to a 7-0 win in the opener. Lanna Martinez picked up the win in the second game, relieving Gracie Ables in the third inning and tossing five shutout innings. The Pomeroys held on for a 4-2 victory.

In the opener, Jasey Conn connected for her fifth home run of the season, going 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Camryn Scott had a triple and a run scored. Ashley Shanks doubled.

In the second game, Scott delivered an RBI single for the go-ahead run in the bottom of the second inning. Conn added an insurance run, coming home on a throwing error after stealing third base.

The Pomeroys (10-6) take a spring break before opening River States Conference action Friday at IU Southeast.

"Those were two really nice wins heading into our conference opener," coach Jim Walker said. "We got good pitching again; Summer threw really well in Game 1. While Gracie struggled a little bit with control to start game 2, Lanna came in and attacked the strike zone to pitch a really solid five innings."

Walker looks forward to his team having a break to refresh for a good IU Southeast team.

"It will be nice for the girls to have a couple days off to recover from some bumps and bruises as we gear up for RSC play," he said.
