Indiana State University Athletics recently issued the following announcement.

Sycamores overpower SEMO in home opening win

Diego Gines and Josue Urdaneta both homered in support of strong pitching performances by Jake Ridgway and Luke Patzner as Indiana State topped Southeast Missouri State in the Sycamores 2022 home opener on Tuesday afternoon, 10-1.

Gines connected on his first grand slam to stake Indiana State (8-6) to an early 5-0 lead, while Urdaneta drilled a pair of two-run home runs late in the game to provide all the offense the Sycamores would need to snap SEMO's (13-2) 11-game winning streak. Ridgway (1-0) went five one-hit innings in his third start of the season to secure the win, while Luke Patzner (S, 1) struck out seven Redhawks over the final four frame to close out the ISU win.

Gines finished the contest 4-for-4 with a season-high five RBI in the contest, while Urdaneta extended his hitting streak with his pair of home runs in addition to a career-high four RBI as the Sycamores offense connected on 14 hits in the contest. Jordan Schaffer, Randall Diaz, and Tyler Nelson added multi-hit games on the afternoon with Schaffer and Nelson both doubling in the win.

Ridgway took advantage of the early Sycamore lead to carry a perfect game into the fifth inning on the way to his first win of the 2022 season. The redshirt senior walked two and struck out a season-high seven batters shutting down the SEMO offense that entered the game hitting .312 from the plate as a team.

Patzner closed out the contest in an extended relief situation as the redshirt sophomore surrendered three hits and one run while striking out seven in his first save of the year.

SEMO was paced by Peyton Leeper's RBI double in the contest, while Andrew Keck added a double to highlight the Redhawks offense in the game.

Ethan Osborne (0-1) took the loss after going the first two innings allowing four runs while striking out four. Matt Perego, Jeb Callaghan, Joseph Karrall, Fischer Rausch, and Noah Stone went the final seven innings in relief.
