Indiana State University Athletics recently issued the following announcement.
Urdaneta named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week
Indiana State redshirt sophomore Josue Urdaneta was named this week's Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
The Maracaibo, Venezuela native earned the award for the first time in his collegiate career and was the first Sycamore to receive the honor since Aaron Beck took home both conference and NBCWA National Player of the Week honors in late April last season.
Urdaneta took advantage in the Sycamores first home week at Bob Warn Field as the redshirt sophomore infielder connected on four home runs and added the walk-off RBI single on Wednesday against SEMO as Indiana State posted a 4-1 week. Urdaneta finished with a .429 batting average with multiple hits in four of the five games over the week.
Urdaneta opened up the week with a pair of two-run home runs and added a stolen base in ISU's 10-1 win in the series opener against SEMO. On Wednesday, the redshirt sophomore was quiet until the ninth inning when he connected on the game-winning walk-off RBI single down the right field line in ISU's 5-4 win.
Friday's opener against Kansas saw Urdaneta again go deep in the bottom of the sixth inning as a part of a two-hit effort in the 6-2 win over the Jayhawks. He added two more hits in the first game on Sunday, before teeing off in the final game of the series.
Urdaneta went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run, while adding three RBI and two runs scored in the 11-10 win. Urdaneta drew a bases-loaded walk in the second inning, doubled home a run in the fourth, and then his solo home run proved to be the difference in the eighth putting ISU ahead 11-8 in the eventual 11-10 win.
For the season, Urdaneta has hit safely in all 18 games and leads Indiana State with 11 multi-hit contests.
