Sycamores announce 2022 team captains

Sycamores announce 2022 team captains

Indiana State head football coach Curt Mallory announced the 2022 team captains on Monday night in the Sycamores' final team meeting of fall preseason camp. The four captains for the upcoming campaign will be: wide receiver Dante Hendrix, defensive lineman Kris Reid Jr., offensive lineman Jose Vazquez IV, and linebacker Geoffrey Brown.

Hendrix serves as a team captain for the second consecutive season, while Reid, Vazquez, and Brown all picked up their first captain nods as voted on by the team.

"This is the ultimate honor to be named a team captain for the season," Mallory said. "These four guys have meant a lot to the program, and all are very deserving. Each of them has consistently exceeded the standards that we as a coaching staff have placed upon them. Now, the expectation is that they will lead, encourage, and push their teammates to succeed in every facet and we will be all the better for it."

Hendrix was recognized on the MVFC Preseason All-Conference team and the Phil Steele MVFC Preseason All-Conference team after a standout 2021 campaign. The Florence, Ky. native bounced back from an early season injury in 2021 that saw the wideout miss five games in the regular season, but he returned to post 37 catches for 395 yards and three touchdowns over the final five games of the season with a pair of 10-catch contests coming against Missouri State and Southern Illinois. Hendrix added his first 100-yard game of the season in the contest against the Bears with 10 catches for 121 yards and a score.

Brown, also a Preseason Phil Steele MVFC honoree, led the Sycamores with 61 total tackles and finished second on the team with 8.5 tackles for loss on his way to garnering Freshman All-American honors. The Fishers, Ind. native posted four games with at least seven tackles in 2021 with a career-best 12 tackles coming in the season finale at Illinois State.

Vazquez started all 11 games at right guard for the Sycamores in the 2021 season on his way to earning Phil Steele MVFC preseason honors. The Carol Stream, Ill. native helped pave the way for Indiana State to average 111.6 rushing yards and 291.2 yards of total offense per game in his redshirt sophomore campaign and added Phil Steele All-MVFC Third Team postseason recognition.

Reid Jr. posted 5.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks in the 2021 season to finish among the Sycamores' team leaders in both categories. The Chicago, Ill. native made his mark in MVFC play last year with a season-high six tackle game coming on the road against South Dakota, while he added sacks against USD, Illinois State, and Western Illinois.
